Vauxhall Road Gets £12m Cycle Lane Upgrade
Liverpool is to start a £12m scheme on Vauxhall Road on Wednesday 28 October. The aim is to make one of the city's key routes safer and easier to use. The work covers more than 2km of the road, between Tithebarn Street and Sandhills Lane.
The first stage is a set of surveys. They will be carried out under lane closures so that staff stay safe. The closures will be clearly marked, and drivers are asked to plan ahead, allow extra time and take other routes where they can.
What the scheme includes
- upgraded footpaths;
- a fully segregated cycle lane;
- new pedestrian crossings at busy junctions, including Leeds Street, Burlington Street, Boundary Street and Sandhills Lane;
- a resurfaced carriageway;
- improved drainage to cut surface water on the road.
Later phases will need temporary traffic management, including road closures and diversion routes. Works are expected to continue into 2028. Public engagement events are planned so that residents, businesses and road users are kept informed, and further details on upcoming works and traffic arrangements will follow as the project goes on.
Cutting the number of collisions along the route is a central aim. Initial proposals went to residents in September 2024, and 81 per cent of the people who responded supported them.
Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, said the council is committed to investing in key routes right across the city to make them safer and more accessible. In his words, the changes will give people more choice in how they travel, whether walking, wheeling, cycling or using public transport. For those who keep driving, he said, better-designed junctions, clearer crossings and fully segregated cycle lanes mean safer, more predictable journeys.
The scheme is part of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority's Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, which is building a network of high-quality active travel routes across the region.
