Tuchel Tells Dewsbury-Hall He Was Very Close to England Call
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been left out of England's squad again, despite a growing belief that his Everton form might earn a place. Thomas Tuchel has now explained how near he came.
Tuchel's reasons
In the summer he was on the FA's World Cup long list. Tuchel later kept him in reserve for the latest Nations League games. Many expected him to be in the group for the matches against Croatia and Spain later this month. He is not.
At a press conference on Friday morning, Tuchel said: "He is close." He called Dewsbury-Hall a very good player who has had a very good season.
The England coach was specific about the fit. In the way England play now, he does not see the midfielder in central midfield. He sees him more as an eight or a 10, used in the finishing part of a game. Tuchel also said competition in that position in his squad is very high, and that Dewsbury-Hall was in the group of 55 named for the World Cup.
Everton's call-ups and Dewsbury-Hall's hope
Jordan Pickford, Jarrad Branthwaite and James Garner were all picked by Tuchel for the squad.
Earlier this week Dewsbury-Hall told Sky Sports that an England call-up would probably be "the biggest achievement of my career". He called playing for your country every young boy's dream and said he will keep striving for it.
Coventry first, then the break
Dewsbury-Hall was expected to play again on Friday night, when Everton hosted Coventry City at Hill Dickinson Stadium. He said beating Coventry would matter for the mood going into the international break, because finishing on a loss lingers. Everton are not in action again until Monday, November 23, away at Brentford.
The Blues arrived with two wins over Newcastle United, one in the Carabao Cup and one in the Premier League. They came after defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal. Dewsbury-Hall said those results showed the team's mentality, because the side did not let the defeats drag them down. Everton are in the cup quarter-finals and sit seventh in the league.
