River of Light Switches On After Three Nights Lost to Storms

Liverpool's River of Light festival got under way on Monday evening, after strong winds wiped out its first three days.

The free event was meant to start on Friday, 23 October, but was called off for safety reasons. It stayed shut over the weekend because yellow weather warnings for wind and rain were still in force.

Organisers announced the restart on Monday. "After a brief pause while the storms passed through, River of Light will light up Liverpool City Centre tonight from 5pm-9pm!" they said. Liverpool City Council posted a short message of its own: "River of Light is back." It also asked visitors to follow its social media channels for any further updates.

Thirteen artworks across the centre

This year's festival has 13 artworks, placed along the waterfront and at other points in the city centre. Pier Head, Exchange Flags, Royal Albert Dock and Liverpool ONE are among the locations. The installations are lit between 17:00 and 21:00 GMT each evening until 1 November.

The theme for 2026 is "Together". Organisers said it celebrates "connection, community and shared experiences".

The programme includes a Flower Power disco, inflatable sheep, playful puppets and glowing stars, according to Visit Liverpool.

On Monday evening the Jones family danced at the Flower Power installation on Exchange Flags.

The council's message continued: "The lights are shining, the city is glowing, and it's time to get back out there and explore. Wrap up warm, take care, and enjoy the magic of River of Light."
