Rail Tunnel Works and Ferry Halt Hit Liverpool Travel
Rail passengers into Liverpool face replacement buses over the weekend of 23 to 25 October, and Mersey Ferries have no date for restarting.
The Merseyrail Northern Line is part of a tunnel upgrade that runs from 11 October to Friday 6 November. Network Rail is spending £3.5m to waterproof and strengthen four tunnels that carry trains into the city centre from the south, and the power control system is being upgraded in the same closure.
Friday and Saturday
Buses replace trains between Hunts Cross and Moorfields. They do not call at Liverpool Central. Trains from Southport, Ormskirk and Headbolt Lane still run into Liverpool Central on an amended timetable.
Sunday 25 October
Northern Line trains stop at Sandhills, with buses between Hunts Cross and Sandhills. On the Wirral Line, Chester and Ellesmere Port trains end at Rock Ferry, and West Kirby and New Brighton trains end at Birkenhead North. Buses link those stations with Hamilton Square and Moorfields.
No Merseyrail trains serve James Street, Moorfields, Lime Street or Liverpool Central that day. Tickets are accepted on replacement buses, which may be busier than usual.
The clocks go back one hour at 2am on Sunday.
Mersey Ferries have not sailed since 10 October, when an engine fault stopped the Snowdrop. According to the operator's notice, checked on 20 October, services were suspended for 20 and 21 October and sightseeing cruise tickets were unavailable. A commuter bus runs between Seacombe and Hamilton Square in the morning and evening. No restart date had been announced.
