Beatles Story to Leave Albert Dock for St John's Market
Apple Corps, the company that looks after The Beatles' business interests, has announced that The Beatles Story will move from the docks to the former St John's Market in Liverpool city centre. The new attraction is due to open in 2028.
The site covers 100,000 square feet and faces Lime Street station. The museum has been at Royal Albert Dock since 1990.
The opening is timed to follow Sam Mendes' four Beatles films, which Sony is set to release in April 2028. Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn, Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan play Lennon, Harrison, McCartney and Starr.
Sets from the films
Visitors will move through immersive displays, original artefacts and reconstructed sets that follow the band from childhood through the Hamburg years to Beatlemania and worldwide fame. Sets and props from Mendes' films will recreate the Cavern Club, Abbey Road studios and Shea Stadium.
The former St John's Beacon radio tower, until recently home to Radio City, will become a viewing attraction inspired by "Yellow Submarine".
A share of ticket income will go to a charity that supports new Liverpool artists. Apple Corps also plans a fan experience at 3 Savile Row in London, due in late 2027.
Reaction
Apple Corps chief executive Tom Greene compared the project to Graceland and Dollywood, saying "it's fitting that The Beatles will have a world class destination for fans to visit". Ringo Starr said "Liverpool was, and still is, music city." Paul McCartney said the band's success "couldn't have happened without Liverpool".
Mike Jones, a Beatles expert at the University of Liverpool, called the films and the attractions a "double boost" for tourism. He added: "I'm not sure that the city's quite prepared for it." He also warned against "Disneyfication".
