Anfield Fans Told to Expect Wind and Merseyrail Checks

Football fans travelling to Anfield on Sunday have been warned about difficult weather as Storm Boelo reaches Merseyside. Liverpool play Brighton in a Premier League match that kicks off at 2pm, and tens of thousands of people are expected to head to the ground.

A yellow Met Office warning for wind covers the region until 9pm on Sunday. It means there is a possibility of injuries and a danger to life from flying debris. Wind speeds could pass 50mph in Liverpool for most of the day, which could damage buildings and bring down trees or large branches. The Met Office says road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible.

Merseyrail precautions

Merseyrail has said some of its first scheduled trains on Sunday will run without passengers. The operator says this is a precaution to make sure the rail lines are clear and safe, and that if a problem is found, further services may be cancelled.

Customers, including anyone travelling for the football, are urged to check the Merseyrail website or app before they set out, as service information will be updated through the day. Rail replacement buses will run between Sandhills, Rock Ferry and Moorfields stations as planned.

Road advice

Saturday brought thunderous downpours, but the Met Office forecast for Liverpool on Sunday shows a much lower chance of rain throughout the day.

Merseyside Police said the wind still creates dangers. In a statement issued on Saturday, the force said driving conditions would be challenging and coastal areas dangerous. Drivers who must travel are asked to keep their eyes on the road, watch for hazards such as fallen trees or traffic lights that are out, and look out for surface water.
